Learn about Hawaiian music traditions, cultural context, and respectful practices,
singing songs that I grew up with in Hawai'i.
Being the third generation born and raised on the island of Kaua'i, my musical upbringing includes a mix of my Japanese heritage and Hawaiian culture. This workshop will explore the varied styles of Hawaiian musical traditions including cultural context, and will explore ways to respectfully include activities from cultures that are not your own. Material for all ages can be presented, along with pedagogical connections, ukulele arrangements, dances, and literature. Repertoire can include Hawaiian music, as well as music representative of other prominent cultures in Hawaii and Hawaiian-style covers of popular music. Participants are welcome to bring an ukulele or guitar to play along!
I would like to acknowledge my positionality, as I am not of Hawaiian descent.
My grandmother, father, and I were born on the Island of Kaua'i, but are of Japanese descent, and I have a little bit of mixed kid magic 🤩
My knowledge on this topic comes from the music of my childhood, and the curiosity of always wanting to know more, to do better, and to pass it along!
This workshop has evolved over time and is never exactly the same as new songs, games, and dances are shared, based on the context of your area, as well as my constant tweaking. 🌺
